I often get emails from my readers asking me if I know of an iPhone spy app that doesn't cost a lot of money.

High end iPhone spy apps have unbelievable features, but the problem is that most people don't have $499 bucks to drop on an iPhone spy app.  So what else is out there? What iPhone spy apps can someone purchase if they only have a few bucks to spend?

Here are a few options. All the iPhone spy apps listed below range anywhere from FREE to $50 bucks. Keep in mind that not all these apps are advertised as an iPhone spy app.  I've just listed the apps which I feel can be used in such a way.

LESS THAN A BUCK

FIND MY IPHONE (part of the MobileMe service)

HOW MUCH? FREE for the first 60 days, then $99 per year after.

WHAT DOES IT DO? 'Find My iPhone' is part of Apple's MobileMe service used to locate a lost or stolen iPhone.  However, it's also a great tool for anyone who wants to track an iPhone.  Once you set it up on your partner's iPhone, you can instantly get updates on their location via your online MobileMe account. You'll also get to see the contacts they have stored on their phone, so you know who they are calling.

You do need to purchase a MobileMe account (you can sign up for a 60 day free trial, so you can get started without paying a dime), and then set it up on the iPhone you want to track, but once you do its a pretty cool way to track someone.  Here is a screenshot of how the service looks when you track an iPhone.

As you can see, once you log onto your MobileMe account to track the iPhone, you do get a pretty good picture of where your special someone is.

Bottom line, this is a great iPhone spy tracking app for someone who wants to monitor their kids because it does require you to physically set it up on their iPhone.  What makes this iPhone tracking app stand apart from the other iPhone tracking apps on the app store, is with the 'Find My iPhone' service, you don't need to request permission from the iPhone user every time you want to locate them, as opposed to the other tracking apps.

WHAT DOES IT DO? This iPhone spy app will turn your iPhone into a spy camera.  The way this iPhone spy app works, is that it enables you to snap photos based on various triggers.  For example, you can set it to snap a photo when a certain audio trigger is tripped.  Other features include a countdown timer that snaps a photo when time expires, and the ability to add a date/time stamp to the photos.

NIGHT RECORDER

HOW MUCH? $2.99

WHAT DOES IT DO? This iPhone app is designed to record the sounds you make while you are asleep.  The app starts to record based on the audio triggers you set.  This means you can leave your iPhone somewhere, such as under a car seat, or in a room while you go to the bathroom. The possibilities of using this app as a recording app are endless.  Features include being able to adjust the sensitivity of the mic, transfer your files via WiFi, and an option to have new audio files every time a new recording takes place, or make one continuous recording.

Not many people realize that you can purchase a feature rich iPhone spy app for less than $50.  Mobile Spy was the first company to sell spy software built exclusively for the iPhone.  Mobile Spy's iPhone spy app has a great set of spy phone features that should be more than enough for anyone who wants to monitor an iPhone.  Features include the following:

• View Call Logs - Each incoming and outgoing number is logged along with duration and time stamp.
• Read Text Messages - Every text message is logged even if the phone's logs are deleted. Includes full text.
• iPhone GPS Tracking - GPS positions are uploaded every thirty minutes with a link to a map.
• Browser History - Every website visited in Safari will be recorded into a list inside your account.

All of this for only $50 bucks.  In my opinion, this is great value for the money.

One thing to point out is that the 'Find My iPhone' and Mobile Spy app require you to physically install the iPhone spy app on the iPhone you want to monitor.  The other apps are installations that are done on your own iPhone.  There is NO way to install either Find My iPhone or Mobile Spy without physical access to the phone.  In addition, Mobile Spy requires that you jailbreak/unlock the iPhone.  Complete step-by-step instructions are provided.
